Deployment simplicity and flexibility. The new Exchange building block model facilitates a simple deployment that will scale for customers of all sizes. This allows small customers who wish to deploy on-prem to do so successfully with one server – and using the same architecture, scale all the way up to large deployments including Office 365 with millions and millions of mailboxes. We’ve drastically simplified network requirements and allow customers a lot of choice and flexibility with network load balancing requirements – which should help lead to reductions in TCO. This new architecture and deployment model also benefits hardware efficiency at all scales and works if customers wish to virtualize.

This Exchange building block model provides flexible network and server architecture. This model features an evolution of past server roles with the client access and mailbox server roles.

Load balancing now does not require session affinity or layer 7 load balancing. Exchange is designed to work with TCP affinity or layer 4 load balancing which is protocol unaware. This is important because this provides flexibility and choice with respect to load balancing. It also increases the capability/utilization of the LB as you won’t have to do SSL processing, session cookie processing, etc – it reduces complexity and cost.
